In case weird display resolutions are your thing, you’re in luck, because the rumoured 10.5-inch iPad will feature a resolution of 2,224×1,668. That’s the same 264 PPI pixel density as the 9.7-inch iPad Pro. Of course, it’s also possible that the 10.5-inch iPad will go the other way and feature the same display resolution as the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, making it have the same pixel density as the iPad mini 4, as pointed out by MacRumors.
The good news is, the release of iOS 10.2.1 has reduced random shutdown issues by as much as 80%. According to Apple, their efforts investigating an issue have paid off, with the fix working on a majority of iPhone 6 and 6s devices. TechCrunch notes that there are actually two different random shutdown issues, and while one has resulted in a battery recall, this one isn’t that.
In case you were thinking Apple wasn’t working on wireless charging for the next iPhone, Reuters claims that Apple has at least five different groups working on wireless charging technology. It remains unclear whether Apple will be adopting existing inductive wireless charging tech, like the Apple Watch, or a long-range wireless charging solution.
Apple Park — Apple’s name for its new campus, including the “spaceship” building, will be ready for employees to begin occupying beginning in April. Marco Arment’s podcast app Overcast hit version 3.0 at the start of the week, and his design walkthrough shows us the changes he’s made to the design and user experience of the app. Originally released in 2014, Overcast’s original design was based on the iOS 7 aesthetics of the time, with translucent glass panels and gestures. Now, the design is more contemporary, has more visible functionality, and is even designed with larger phones in mind.
MacStories also has notes on the changes in Overcast 3.0, including the iOS 10 features it comes with such as the 3D Touch icon and rich notifications. Their interview with Arment sheds some light on the Overcast revenue models to date, and how including closed-source libraries in your app can be a potentially risky thing to do in today’s political climate.
A rumoured March event will see Apple release a new iPad Pro lineup, larger-capacity iPhone SE, and even a possible Product(RED) version of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. If true, every iPad in the range will go Pro, including the iPad mini, with refreshes of the existing 9.7 and 12.9-inch models and the introduction of a 10.5-inch model with edge-to-edge display. The iPhone SE is expected to show up in a 128GB capacity, along with red-coloured iPhones.
The discovery of new Mac malware has been attributed to a Russian hacking group attributed with meddling in last year’s US Presidential election. Mac malware Xagent can be customised to capture passwords, screenshots, and stealing iOS backups. The good news is, there’s very little chance your machine will ever be infected with this kind of malware, as it was used in specific, targeted attacks.
DigiTimes reports a slight variation on iPhone rumours. They say that along with the refreshes of the 4.7 and 5.5-inch models, the new model will be a 5.8-inch model. It’s this 5.8-inch model that will have the glass casing reinforced by a stainless steel frame, and it’s the same 5.8-inch design that will feature the OLED display, setting it apart from all other iPhones to date.
Apple is now listed as a member of the Wireless Power Consortium, lending credence to rumours that this year’s iPhone will feature wireless charging. Membership of the WPC promises use of a single wireless charging standard, known as Qi, even though Apple already uses its own version of Qi for the Apple Watch that means you can’t use other Qi-compatible chargers with it. It’s entirely possible Apple will do the same for the iPhone, but Apple has confirmed their WPC membership saying that it allows them to contribute ideas to wireless charging.
